PLOT YOUR CAREER IN THE MARITIME AND MARINE

Yachting - Flotilla Engineer

Become: Yachting - Flotilla Engineer

Yes, it requires qualifications. Yes, it requires experience. But if you have been sailing through your formative years and are good around boats, you may be well down the path to meeting the needs of this role. Moreover, if your engineering know-how is from working in another discipline such as automotive, you may be able to slot in to the marine leisure Flotilla Engineer role without too much difficulty. Ideally, you will have previous experience of yacht maintenance and marine systems, including engines, electrics, electronics and plumbing. You will be keen to expand your knowledge and as a minimum have a mechanical bent with a basic understanding of electrical theory. Sailing qualifications to Coastal Skipper would be advantageous though not essential and as a minimum, you must hold an RYA Competent Crew certificate.

About: Yachting - Flotilla Engineer

This is not a 9 to 5 position. Your day can start when others have finished, with maintenance and defect rectification taking place either whilst at anchor or overnight. And, being part of a small lead boat team, you will also turn your hand to supporting the Skipper and Hostess as required. Whole ship commitment also includes preparing the boat on turn-round day so that the guests embarking enjoy a great possible flotilla week, as did their predecessors and as will their successors. Sociable and outgoing, you will have a good whack of face time with the guests and your job at the end of the day is to ensure they have a really good holiday. This is seasonal employment in the main and for those considering a career in Leisure Marine, a really good way of getting some experience before going for a position in a larger yacht or indeed progressing into the more formal and demanding world of Superyachts.

The salary is low but accommodation and uniform is included as is the majority of food and drink, courtesy of establishments in the locations which the flotilla visits. Tips are the norm and can be sufficient to meet your running costs.
