PLOT YOUR CAREER IN THE MARITIME AND MARINE

Stevedore

Stevedore

Become: Stevedore

If you want to become a stevedore you’ll need to be a practical and physically fit person who is able to follow safety instructions.

You won’t need any special qualifications to start and can do it as soon as you leave school, from the age of 16, if you like. However, having some past experience in plant operation, forklift training or customer service will be an advantage, depending on the type of port work you’d like to do.

You might be able to start off your career as a port operative in an apprenticeship. See the Apprenticeships website for potential opportunities near you.

About: Stevedore

A stevedore loads and unloads cargo on the docks and wharfs. This might be done by hand, but most cargo units are enormous now and have to be moved using cranes and other heavy machinery.

Work might be cold, wet and uncomfortable, as you could be working in any weather right by the sea.

Health and safety is key – you’ll need proper gear before being allowed on-site, and you must pass a medical exam before you start work.
