About: Tug master

Tug Masters typically have an extensive seafaring background along with a significant amount of experience at sea, either as a ship’s Officer or as a ship’s Master. Tug Masters can progress into various other shore based roles within the maritime industry including Marine Pilots, Marine Inspectors, Fleet Management and Port Operations.

Tug Masters operate tug boats in order to assist with the berthing and unberthing of large vessels. Tug boats are very powerful, so operating one requires a high level of skill, as well as thorough knowledge of the Port environment in which they are operating. The Tug Master works closely with Port Authorities, Ships Masters and Marine Pilots to ensure that vessels coming in and out of Ports do so safely and efficiently. The Tug Master will generally meet a ship out at sea, attach a line and help to guide it into berth.
