Wind Turbine Technician (Offshore)
Become: Wind Turbine Technician (Offshore)
To become a wind turbine technician you will need A-Levels in STEM subjects and a keen interest in engineering. A degree in an engineering related subject is an advantage.
About: Wind Turbine Technician (Offshore)
As a wind turbine technician you will be working with the future of energy production. Every one of the wind turbines out at sea has to be maintained and this means someone has to ascend the 85 metres or so of the turbines, open them up and solve problems.
You will need to have a head for heights, good practical ability and have an interest in engineering. Routine tasks could include changing the hydraulic oil, replacing parts or completing the annual servicing.
Work starts early and requires transit from the shore on specialist vessels which will take you out to the turbines at sea. Health and safety is a priority and no transfer of personnel will be conducted when the sea conditions are too rough.
Training is conducted by your employer who may send you to a purpose built wind turbine training centre where you will gain advanced rescue training and climbing qualifications.
