Marine superintendents are experts in their fields, and as such, you can't simply become one. That said, you can know what paths will best lead you there. Working at sea is a normal pre-requisite and usually at Master or Chief Engineer level. Additionally you will ordinarily require a degree in an academic subject.
About: Marine Superintendent
As an expert in your discipline you would be advising shipping companies and Masters on how to proceed with normal passages, emergencies and whenever else they needed advice. You are essentially the main link between the vessel and the office. MArine superintendents usually carry out the following tasks:
- Plan and arrange all technical maintenance and repairs needed on the vessels.
- Carry out vessel inspections and monitor the ship’s conditions.
- Ensure that the vessels are in compliance to classification society and government regulations and meet international safety standards.
- Research and implement new procedures to improve daily operations.
- Liaise with Chief Engineers and Master Mariners to ensure the smooth running of the vessels.
